Museum Center at 5ive Points Announces Spring Watercolor Exhibit
CLEVELAND, TN: The Museum Center is pleased to host Colors of Spring: Regional Artists from the Tennessee Watercolor Society. The exhibit showcases paintings by 31 members of the Tennessee Watercolor Society (TnWS) who live in the Cleveland/Chattanooga area. The exhibit showcases 38 paintings that present diverse views in landscapes, still lifes, florals, figure stu...dies and abstracts. The exhibit is sponsored by Cooke’s Food Store and by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.
The exhibit is organized by Helen Burton, the Society’s Region III director and a long-time Museum member, and Curator of Collections Elizabeth Carriger. Ms. Burton was instrumental in asking the artists to submit works for the exhibit, as well as helping with the installation. Ms. Carriger served as juror for the exhibit, selecting works which will be included in the show.
The TnWS was founded in 1971 by Chattanooga artists Mary Britten Lynch and a board of art professionals from across the state. The purpose of TWS is to elevate the stature of watercolor and to educate the public to the significance of watercolor as an important, creative, and permanent painting medium. The Society furthers the interests of painters in all water media by its programs, competitive exhibitions and workshops, as well as instructional videos and other educational materials. It currently has 250 members statewide. Region III consists of 70 members from Chattanooga, Cleveland, Athens, Etowah, Ocoee and the surrounding areas. The Museum first exhibited works by Region III artists in 2009.
Five artists in the show are from Cleveland. They include Jennie Kirkpatrick, Sue Summers, Nora McNeill, Sherry Hatton, and Helen Burton. Also included in the exhibit are nearby artists Marie Spaeder Haas from Ocoee and Dee Hoffman from Etowah. Two artists, Frances Graves and Elizabeth Grater are from Athens. Both of these artists are among the founding members of the TnWS.
The Museum will again offer a series of education programs for adults and children to enhance learning throughout the exhibit. To make reservations or learn more about these programs please call the Museum at 339-5745 and ask for Tracy. The class schedule is as follows:
April 11- Intermediate Watercolor Classes
May 16 Mondays 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. $60 for museum members, $65 for non- museum members Ann Rutledge, a member of the Tennessee Watercolor Society, will teach this six- week intermediate course. Topics covered will be still-life composition, using photos for your composition, techniques such as glazing and mingling colors, and painting water and shadows. Prerequisite for taking the class is having taken a beginning watercolor class or knowledge and experience with watercolor painting. Students will be given a supply list of items to bring to class. Reservations and prepayment by Wednesday, April 6th. Sponsored by the Tennessee Arts Commission.
April 27 Van Trip to the Tennessee State Museum9:00 a.m.—6:30 p.m. $30 for museum members, $35 for non-museum members
Join Museum staff on a van trip to Nashville’s Tennessee State Museum to see their Egyptian Replicas, Relics, and Revivals Exhibit along with their magnificent collection of Tennessee history. The exhibit is filled with fascinating treasures from Egypt, the museum itself is filled with Tennessee history, and the group always has a great time. The group will enjoy lunch on their own in the historic Arcade where there are many restaurants. Reservations and pre-payment required by Friday, April 22nd
May 9 Excursion to Dale Armstrong’s Jewelry Studio 8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. $10 for museum members, $15 for non-museum members
Meet at the Museum Center and caravan to Riceville to tour the lapidary studio of jewelry artist Dale Armstrong whose magnificent work is sold in the Museum Center’s Store. The group will be given a special tour by Dale Armstrong of the “rocks” around her studio that she turns into incredible gemstones and watch her create a cabochon from rough material through an amazing process. She will also demo her wire wrapping process for which she is internationally known, followed by a special trunk show just for the group. Each participant will get to take home a free tumbled polished stone of their choosing. Following this fun tour the group will stop for lunch on their own at the Open Door Café in Athens. There is some outdoor walking on uneven terrain in this trip. Reservations and pre-payment required by Wednesday, Mary 4th.
May 14 Children’s Watercolor Class with Aloha Buffington1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. $30 for museum members, $35 for non-museum members
Young people in grades 4th – 8th will get the chance to learn the art of watercolor with art teacher, Aloha Buffington. Students will explore color and light through the medium of watercolor while learning basic watercolor techniques. They will leave with a finished work of art. All supplies are included and students will get to take home quality watercolors and brushes. Reservations and pre-payment required by Wednesday, May 11th.
The Museum Center at 5ive Points preserves and interprets the history and culture of the Ocoee District of Southeast Tennessee. The museum hosts exhibits and education programs. The Museum Store sells Appalachian arts and crafts from the region. Hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The museum is closed Sunday, Monday & holidays. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and students, and free for children under 5. Groups of 12 or more are $4 each. The Museum is free the first Saturday of each month. Members of the Museum Center receive free admission.
